Or, as Douglas Mackinnon recounts in “Left And Right Going Nuclear On Rick Perry” (Townhall , August 29, 2011),

an editor of a major newspaper told me: “We plan to declare war on Rick Perry and do all in our power to crush him.”

There you have it. No pretense of integrity, professionalism or of unbiased news-gathering. This particular newspaper plans to use its very considerable resources to destroy the Perry campaign before it gains momentum. Period.

In which case, the ID connection may well be aired repeatedly. Will media dirt sifters air the fact that he failed a critical test in Texas. He appointed Darwin loyalist to a key education post and all the rest follows. As Bill Dembski pointed out, re Michele Bachmann (who does appear to be sincere), that’s all that counts, not blustering in favour of a theory the politician usually doesn’t understand. The betting here is that the dirt sifters will sniff this one and pass. Yes, it’s an inconsistency, but it signals that, if he wins, Perry really is safe in this matter. The worst they’d have to tolerate is empty sermonizing, riffing off a theory he doesn’t understand.

What’s more revealing is the bread-and-butter motive of most of those who will join the fray against him. Quoting Erick Erickson,

… Because so much of the consultant class will be shut out of the White House should Rick Perry win, their livelihoods depend on Rick Perry losing either now or in November. And frankly, for a few in the GOP consultant class, they’ll gladly see Perry lose in November just to ensure they are not shut out of a Republican White House. For all the talk of Perry being an establishment guy, the establishment hates his guts as much as the left does . . .

And so much of the media will lose easy access to tips for soft stories on very willing subjects.

It’ll be a drama, but ID is not likely to play a serious role among those in the know. A sock puppet only. It could be different for Bachmann, however.

tribune7, thanks for your comments. Actually, no one is looking for a saint, but too many politicians these days play to what they regard as a stupid electorate, and then claim that political realities force them to do the opposite of what they said. But we shall see.News

It is more strange that many have become so cowed by the "compromise establishment" that they believe standing frim on principle will fail. When compromise means nothing but slightly slowing down one's race to the edge of a cliff, compromise is not called for.William J Murray

OT: A victory for free speech in America: The state-run California Science Center (CSC) has paid $110,000 to settle a lawsuit by American Freedom Alliance (AFA) against CSC for violating AFA's First Amendment free speech rights to advocate intelligent design (ID). As part of the settlement, the CSC also has invited AFA to present the ID event it previously cancelled. http://www.evolutionnews.org/2011/08/california_science_center_pays050081.htmlbornagain77

Yes, it’s an inconsistency, but it signals that, if he wins, Perry really is safe in this matter. Perry is one, who unlike Michele, has had to face the fires of executive leadership which means you are going to have to throw some bones to those with whom you may not agree -- sort of like when Clinton found a pro-life Democrat to whom he could name as ambassador to the Vatican. It strange that we have become so cowed by the establishment that we assume that Perry cannot have sincere doubts -- as all thinking persons do and as he himself has expressed-- about the theory of evolution. Painting Perry as an extreme anti-evo, btw, can seriously backfire on the old order. If he wins as an extreme anti-evo he is going to have far less need to compromise. If you should buy into the claims that Perry is just a mere political hack who says what it takes to get elected, remember this: successful political hacks have finely attuned fingers with which to test the wind. A political hack elected as an extreme anti-evo does not bode well for evo-fanatics. As of yet, I haven't seen anything that will cause me not to support Perry. If you look for a saint you will not find a president.tribune7
