I guess the atheist could turn the rare-earth hypothesis around and say, “That is why we must make the best of the short time we have here,” or something to that effect. Personally, I wouldn’t see the point, but I can imagine them saying that.

Anyway, I thought the remake was abysmal.

In the remake, the line “Klaatu barada nikto” is spoken by Gort after Klaatu is wounded by the soldiers when he first leaves the globe.

You should check out the new Battlestar Galactica TV series. Inhabitable planets seem to be a bit more common on the show than Klaatu suggests, but the point is made that the universe is a very inhospitable place and it’s quite difficult to find what you need to survive out there, including habitable planets. When I saw BSG, I made the same comparison with Star Trek that you did. Nice to see on TV a more realistic representation of what’s really out there.
