Finding some guy underneath a tree and giving him a ballot to fill out of who he thinks should be president is not a functional way for any nation much less the worlds most powerful nation, to operate.

And you know democracy works fine as long as those people voting really care enough to actually want to go tot he polls on election day- that is self motivated and take the time to educate themselves about the reality of the real issues via sources from various political and philosophical view points. But when you have a liberal left wing TV and media telling you to go out and vote for one candidate because of a bunch of propaganda you have a bad situation. Add that to the fact that the democrat party and the international forces at be pour money into the country to manipulate the voting system so that they can register as many misinformed and manipulated people a physically possible and get them to vote at their homes and even weeks before the election!

This is not democracy and these votes I am focusing on here have no integrity or real value. Yet those powers that be lurking in the shadows know that very well that they will count as much or more than those voters who do really care and really take the time to be informed.

...messianic figure who draws huge, enthusiastic crowds by promising government-driven life change - salvation, really - through the defeat of the evil people who have, in the past, caused his supporters to fail in various ways.

Have you been cribbing from Obama's strategy book?

I think it is incorrect to state "Fascism is not a program in politics, it is a mood."

For those of you who are theology buffs, you should check out Niebuhr's theological criticism of both liberal democracy and communism. I think it applies w/ fascism, too, with fascism having a problem with the doctrine of sin not extending to the favored class.

jjcassidy, good points. Fascists can look back to ancient glories - or forward to transcendent futures - or both at once. The one thing they aren't is comfortable in the present day.

On the first one, Goldwater as a fascist actually makes sense if you reflect that he wanted to turn off the font of Justice and Value as they envision it. He wants to arrange a public movement to "roll back the clock". That is you can see it if you look at it from the eyes of the "disenfranchised".

I do see the Volkisch movement in this though, as Hitler indicated that heredity--and who the Germans were as a race--was of tantamount importance. Just like the titular Fascists in Italy were hearkening to the Glory of Rome as a symbol to every Italian. Neither country felt that they had gotten a fair shot at the largess of the colonial age. Germany was recovering from the devastation of the 100 years war, and Italy from a long embattled civil war among its city-states.
