“Trigger warning” on Immanuel Kant

One tries to catch a nap and then this:

This book is a product of its time and does not reflect the same values as it would if it were written today. Parents might wish to discuss with their children how views on race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, and interpersonal relations have changed since this book was written before allowing them to read this classic work.

So? Are not all books products of their time?

The Odyssey? Pride and Prejudice?

This seems not to be a joke. Who should even be reading Kant who needs this rubbishy warning?

For that matter, why should someone who needs an intellectual soother, teething ring, and infant carrier be at a university?

If you need trigger warnings, trust me, you do not need university. Save the money for cosmetic surgery instead.

God, Immanuel Kant, Richard Dawkins, and the Quantum - Antoine Suarez - video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQOwMX4bCqk Antoine Suarez is the founding director of the Center for Quantum Philosophy in Zurich, based on philosophical questions raised in the 1970's and 1980's by John Bell. Suarez and Valerio Scarani, inspired by discussions with Bell, proposed in 1997 the "before-before" experiment (which confirmed quantum non-locality from another angle).,,, http://www.informationphilosopher.com/solutions/scientists/suarez/ i.e. The philosophy of Kant and Dawkins is refuted empirically.bornagain77

news: The worst part is that, historically, the people who believe that kind of thing only spend a bit of time with the bong and the thong. Then they discover the jack boot, which turns out to be more fun for them. Isis is just a bunch of Kantian hippies? Channelling HL Mencken , news?velikovskys

Curiously, I am writing about that exact problem right now, for a different venue (which is why news posting is so slow). The worst part is that, historically, the people who believe that kind of thing only spend a bit of time with the bong and the thong. Yes, and let's not forget the Darwin connection: If reality is incomprehensible, then design is undetectable.StephenB

As usual, everyone is worried about the wrong thing. Kant's politically incorrect statements about about social issues is not that important. What matters is his politically correct epistemology. If you can convince a man that the cat he just saw may well be a green ball of slime, then you have created enough intellectual mischief to screw up millions of minds for hundreds of years.StephenB

Amazing how Hume and Kant duped so many feeble minds.
Interesting. What did they say that duped so many minds? PS I agree the warning is absurd.Mark Frank

One silly thing is that they'd have wanted to put the same warning on the first edition, bearing in mind that Kant's works were all about challenging the prevalent value systems of his day. How fortunate that today's value system happens to be the standard by which all others must be judged (including that of five years ago).Jon Garvey
