I think you’re conflating making the world over in the image of democratic America with dissolving sovereign borders. You can probably safely presume that making the world safe for democracy and making the world safe for capitalism are conflated in Bush’s mind.

If what Bush is doing is dissolving sovereign borders you might expect he’d be trying to strenghthen the U.N. instead of weakening it and calling it irrelevant. You also might expect him to be less supportive of constitutional constructionism which gives primacy to states rights and restricts federal power to only that which is explicitely given it in the constitution. Bush opposes both federalism and an activist judiciary which, domestically speaking, is evidence against dissolution of borders.

Probably the more accurate rendering is sovereign military borders “yes” and sovereign economic borders “no”.

Granted, but “America” and “Americana” are now offshore corporate concepts, not bordered nation concepts. I think Bush prefers to deliver speeches in Spanish. It actualizes globalism. That’s a long way from the genius of TR’s Melting Pot. The only reason I voted for Bush twice is that the other side would dissolve borders, language and Constitution even faster.

I’m not sure if that’s strictly true (it probably is) but it’s sort of illustrative of the thinking behind Pax Americana.

A trade zone? That might be worth partial credit if I’m feeling generous. Pax Americana is what the neocons are all about. Capitalism is a part of that but not the whole enchilada.

TR presumed America as a nation state. Bush-Clinton-Bush presume America as a trade zone. “English” is not only irrelevant, it is futile, (not to mention wage-inflationary).

No, but I think we can encourage the “melting pot” that tocqueville spoke of… (the mixing of all cultures into a new race — The American), and discouraging the balkanization of the U.S. that multiculturalism encourages.

No need to discourage diversity — but we need to teach more about what makes us the same than what makes us difference. Let’s teach American History instead of _____ American hisotry.
