True, some dropouts suffer from low self-esteem. But so do some high-performing teens in fashionable Belmont, nearby. Belmont’s standards for achievement are much more exacting than Fishtown’s. Failure—and consequent low self-esteem—lurks at every turn there. Significantly, anorexia—linked to high self-criticism/low self-esteem in girls—is actually far more common in Belmont than in Fishtown.
The trouble with Fishtown teens’ self-esteem is that it is too often inflated by future sources of trouble. Let’s look at the four Fishtown teen high school dropouts’ choices again. This time with a more critical eye. More.
