William Dembski wrote, Pixie is no longer with us. Well, Bill, I would have answered Pixie's question "why do you think it is the teacher?" if he had not added the silly question "Do teachers often have to write lines on the blackboard in your experience?" The reason why I think the cartoon shows a teacher instead of a student is that the original caption of the cartoon was "The Legacy of Dover" and the Dover decision was a restraint on the Dover school board and teachers and not a restraint on the students. Also, students generally have more freedom than teachers to initiate discussions of criticisms of Darwinism in public-school science classrooms. Anyway, I think that interpreting the cartoon as showing a teacher rather than a student adds an amusing ironic twist to it.Larry Fafarman

Larry, why do you think it is the teacher? Do teachers often have to write lines on the blackboard in your experience? Sheeeesh, Pixie, it's just a cartoon. It doesn't have to be literally accurate. A general comment: Why should we suppose from this cartoon that there is a “Church of the Living Darwin”? Again, you are taking the cartoon too literally. You're spoiling it.Larry Fafarman

Tribune, there is some ambiguity in both those cases; we do not know for certain why Gonzales failed to get tenure (maybe Iowa State did want anyone associated with anti-science, rather than someone who criticised evolution). Micheal Behe, Granville Sewell and Michael Denton still hold university positions despite their criticisms of evolution. Larry, why do you think it is the teacher? Do teachers often have to write lines on the blackboard in your experience? A general comment: Why should we suppose from this cartoon that there is a "Church of the Living Darwin"? Is a rejection of any and all criticism a distinguishing feature of religion? The Pixie

The Pixie said, I have not heard of any instance where a pupil has been repremanded for criticising evolution That's a teacher in the cartoon, not a pupil.Larry Fafarman

But people do criticise evolution, And when they do, even mildly and respectfully, they don't get tenure at Iowa State or they lose their privileges at the Smithsonian.tribune7

But people do criticise evolution, see for example... this blog. Are you thinking specifically about to in schools? I have not heard of any instance where a pupil has been repremanded for criticising evolution (though I imagine he or she would be if the criticism involved disrupting class). Are you aware of any? bornagain77, scientists always doubt wishful speculation, whether in evolution or not. It will be interesting to see how they respond when hard mathmatical or empirical evidence for Design is accepted presented. The Pixie

There should also be a sign above the blackboard that states. Rule #1 No wishful speculation of Evolution will ever be doubted! Rule #2 No hard mathmatical or empirical evidence for Design will ever be accepted! Rule #3 When confronted with overwhelming evidence for design see rule #1bornagain77
