The following poem entitled “First they came…” is inscribed at the Boston Holocaust Memorial. Those who believe Guillermo Gonzalez’ involvement with ID outside the Iowa State campus can be justly used in consideration of whether or not to grant him tenure would be well served to think about this.

First they came…

They came first for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

This is just wrong. Dr. Gonzalez deserves better. I say we memorialize this travesty with a "Notable Controversies" category at ISU's Wikipedia page--for historicity's sake and that of future applicants, of course. ISU's science dept is henceforth blacklisted in my book.DanielC

Yes, of course. Any university without the ideological bias would be thrilled to have such a prolific young astronomer on staff. Guillermo practically invented the field of study called "The Galactic Habitable Zone". His work in that area made the cover of Scientific American the same year he joined Iowa State. It's featured on NASA's website, Nature, Science, and undoubtedly many, many more-obscure journals. But that's not the point. If Guillermo wanted to make a move he could have done so at any time. Now he's being forced to make a move - uproot himself and his family from where they've established a home and connection with the community.DaveScot

So, another institution without the ideological bias (or perhaps even a favorable one) towards ID now has the opportunity to hire GG.jaredl
